Hi Students and Parents,

Hoping everyone is doing well as we adjust to a new norm for the unforeseeable future. Just want to reiterate to everyone that ZOOM Meetings will continue to take place twice a week:
Tuesdays and Thursdays @ 1:00 PM for Grade 9's.
Work will continue to be assigned via Google Classroom. We just finished 'Romeo and Juliet' in grade 9. All assigned work that students attempt will be graded. Should a student's average remain the same or improve it will be entered in PowerSchool. Should the mark decrease one's average it will not be entered.

Please keep in mind that learning will continue and the curriculum in the English course will be covered. The goal for doing such is to give each student every advantage as they transition into the next grade. A number of students have been active and participating in both the video conferencing sessions and completing assigned work via Google Classroom. Some students have not been active on video conferencing but are doing assigned work on Google Classroom. Both are acceptable and beneficial for students.
However, if a student is not participating in any form of educational activity - for example the core subjects (math, science, English, social studies, French) they may put themselves at a disadvantage:
1) not participating results in student not being able to improve one's average
2) students at risk of failing or currently not passing have an opportunity to do assignments to improve one's mark. There are students who need to engage and they are not.

Parents are urged to check with their child(ren) to ensure they are engaged and active with their academics. Teachers at MDJH have been posting regularly on Google Classroom.

Parents,
Have emailed both students and parents. If you did not receive the email please check your spam folder.
CONTENTS:
Both grade 9 English classes for Mr. Squires will meet via ZOOM video conferencing on Monday, April 27th at 12:30 PM. We will discuss and review ACT 4 & 5 of Romeo and Juliet. This will be followed by a quiz like you have been doing all along and an assignment. When R & J is completed students will be given a comprehensive assignment encompassing multiple sections. The purpose is to allow students opportunity to improve their mark. This is not Romeo and Juliet related but something different.

As mentioned in a previous email, you will be marked on all material up to March 13th. Students wishing to improve their mark after this date can do so by completing assigned work. When such work gets corrected and your English average increases or remains the same the mark will be entered in PowerSchool. Should the mark you receive bring your average in English down it will show in PowerSchool as 'Collected' but the mark will not be entered.

Please refer to Google Classroom for all documents and links for assigned work. Invitations to video conference are also on Google Classroom. If students are only coming online now I urge you to read all posts since the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions.

Each week I will be posting ideas, lessons and materials on my web page as suggestions for you to participate in being active while staying at home.

Under the tab, Staying Physically Active, you will find activities. This week you will find:
1. Fitness Circuit Cards
2. Core Exercises

Try to complete one or both of these twice during the week or more often if you choose. Think of it as having Physical Education class twice during the seven-day school cycle.
Example: Monday: Fitness Circuit Cards & Wednesday: Core Exercises.

Under the Resources tab you will find:
- Skeletal System (Major Bones of the Body)
- Major Muscles of the Body

These two resources will provide knowledge & understanding of the human body.

The WE-Well being resource may be useful for you during the COVID-19 pandemic. MDJH is a WE School.

The NLESD has issued a directive to principals that parents/guardians of students planning to participate should provide the school with a permission for the absence. The protest starts at 11:00 at the clock tower at MUN. (see https://vocm.com/2019/09/21/students-across-province-gearing-up-for-global-climate-strikes/)
