We will be going to the computer lab tomorrow AFTER I take attendance in room 109A.

Today I talked to all students about written work that is passed in and the criteria necessary for junior high. Here are the expectations:

1. Quality writing always wins over quantity. Please ensure that what you write has substance.

2. Vary your word choice. When you use the same words multiple times, it means you need to use a thesaurus.

3. Please use a dark pencil that has an eraser. I correct around 200 pages of work a week and would like to keep my eyes.

4. Please do not list in a journal or writing piece. I'm listing because of the constricted space of this posting. This information is like a grocery list. In language arts writing, the paragraph indicates a new idea and thus a number is not necessary (i.e., the first thing that I, the second point I want, the third point).

5. Stick to the topic sentence. Provide evidence with what you are writing using text to self, text to text or text to world.

6. If you are given class time to work on an assignment, utilize the time. You will have limited written work to do at homeif you do this.

Journal entry #2 Due this Wednesday

Your choice of a topic or write about the following, 'Teenagers Are Trouble'.

Last week we discussed the 'Three T's' which consist of transitional words and phrases, topic sentence and thesis. Here are the definitions the students have:

Topic Sentence: It expresses the main idea of the paragraph. It generally states what the paragraph will be about, and comes at the beginning of the body paragraph.

Thesis: A statement that presents the writer's point of view clearly and concisely. It is usually (but not always near the beginning of the piece of writing.

Transitional words and phrases: Words that show clearly how ideas are connected with one another (e.g. therefore, as well, thus, in addition).

Please read your independent novel on a regular basis. We will have the book talk after the text on October 14. The format has been posted previously on this homework page.

This week I gave out the persuasive essay outline and scoring guide. Please refer to these sheets while you write your essay. I have also passed out papers on how to create a bibliography on Microsoft Word.

Persuasive topics should be confirmed by Monday.

Earlier this week, students went to the LRC to take out a novel for 'Reading Friday'. The language department has designated every Friday as a time where students can enjoy reading a book for the joy of reading. They can read this book at home and during times in class when they have leisure time.

Students will be asked to do an ORAL BOOK TALK of the novel they are independently reading. Here is the format:

Students, you are asked to read your independent novels over a one-month period. You will then present information on your book by way of a three-minute book talk. The presentation should include:

1. Author and title of the book.

2. Synopsis of the book: Tell who, what, when, where, why and how.

3.Read one excerpt from the book to show one of the following: theme or character development. Page #:
Paragraph #:

4. Connection: Compare your book to a movie, TV show, another book, or a life experience. Be sure to tell exactly how your example connects with the novel.

5. Message: Describe what you learned as a result of reading your book.

6. Strengths: List two aspects of the book you enjoyed and explain why you enjoyed them.

7. Weakness: Describe one area in the book in which you think the author could have done better. What would you suggest?

Please bring your LITERACY TEXTBOOKS to class on Monday.

Enjoy your weekend!
