Students were given the opportunity to get an independent novel from the library last week. Some students were unable to take a novel out due to a previous novel taken out and not returned. Hence, all students are responsible to have their independent novels by now and should be reading such. Fridays have been designated reading day. If a student has an overdue novel(s) they should bring in the novel, return it, and get a new one. Students will have the chance to start/continue reading in class tomorrow. Attached is the assignment and the rubric for the marking scheme. Students are not obligated to get a novel from the library, however, they should have the novel in class for Friday and in the event they have some free time in their respective classes.

We are also reading stories/essays pertaining to the topic 'informational text'. A handout containing important notes about 'informational text' has been given to students. They need to review it. We are doing questions in class on the stories we cover. Those not completing questons need to finish it for homework. To date we have completed three stories in the text Literacy (orange and purple in colour):
1) “Over the Edge” Page 6
2) “Small Inspiration” page 19
3) “William’s Windmill” Pages 15–18

Students wishing to find out more about informational text can certainly google it and browse through the information to develop a better understanding.

We will be starting persausive essays next week. This topic will be two-fold in nature: i) research into topic and final product ii) essay will be the student's speech for oral presentations in class. More info and handouts to follow.

Important dates:

February 8th Independent novel read and assignment handed into teacher electronically (sheet given to students). Those students who sign up on the internet for a glogster or prezi can sign on via teacher computer so teacher can mark it accordingly.

February 13th Test on 'informational text'. It will contain an unseen essay with subsequent questions to follow. Similar to what we are currently doing in class.
