Language Arts Assigned By: Kelly Mahoney | Language Arts Test Tuesday, Feb 4th
Pass in your 'Chasing a Dream' question booklet that day, test day!
Today we discussed and wrote definitions for terms that all students should be very familiar with. We also discussed an outline for 'how to' answer constructed response questions.
Introduction: Use part of the question to rephrase the response... restate the question... what text are you discussing, be clear!
Body: Give at least 2 examples from the given text and explain how each example supports your answer. So give example then explain..... give 2nd example and then explain.
Conclusion: Restate your main point in a different way!
Point of View
• If you want to tell a story from a character’s point of view, the narrator will be limited to what that character knows.
• Limited First Person
A limited narrator tells the story in the First Person using “I”
Ex “I knew I had to focus on the race, but I kept wondering why Nadia was angry.”
• Limited Third Person
A limited narrator may also tell the story in the third person, using “he, she or they”.
Ex “Amed knew he had to focus on the race, but he kept wondering why Nadia was angry.”
• Omniscient
If you want to describe the thoughts and feelings of all of the characters, make the narrator “all knowing”. An omniscient character is all knowing and tells the story in the third person and is NOT a character in the story.
Ex “Amed’s taunting had made Nadia furious, but she wasn’t going to think about this now. The starting signal went off. Nadia took off like a shot, but Ahmed fell behind, distracted by Nadia’s anger.”
Terms
• Symbolism
The use of an object to represent an idea or feeling such as a raven to represent death or a dove to represent peace.
• Imagery
language that creates a picture and sensory impressions (images that appeal to sight, sound, touch, taste and smell.)
• Figurative Language
uses images that cannot be taken literally
ex “Your room looks like a cyclone hit it.”
it suggests similarities in things that are not usually compared.
• Simile
a comparison using the words ‘like or as”
ex. The sea is like a hungry dog.
• Metaphor
a direct comparison without using “like or as”
ex. The sea is a hungry dog.
• Personification
giving an animal, object or concept human characteristics.
ex. “I looked the sun straight in the eye. He put on glasses.”
• Alliteration
the repetition of the consonant at the beginning of words.
ex. “Peter Piper picked a pack of pickled peppers.”

For homework students were asked to complete a word search and crossword handout. |
Language Arts Assigned By: Kelly Mahoney | Today we began the selection on page 188, 'One of a Kind'. I read this out loud and discussed the assigned homework questions, and how to go about answering them. Please complete #s 1 to 5
For #2... I asked the students to write the main purpose of the article, being the first sentence after the italicized text... then I asked students to write the main purpose of each paragraph after that... they only need to complete this for the first 2 pages, as I am trying to show them how a writer supports his claim with supporting evidence and details.

Reminder that your Journal Entry for 'Mick Harte Was Here' is due Friday, Jan 17. to achieve top marks ...
This entry should include a brief explanation of,
1. 2 of 3 songs we looked at in class; How did the song writer express his/her grief through his or her lyrics?
2. A song choice of your own that expresses an emotional expression to loss of a loved one.
3. How could these songs' lyrics help Mick's sister, Phoebe, deal with her loss?
Reminder:
each of the songs reflect different tones. These moods reflect on how the writer was dealing with a particular loss of a loved one.
Note points brought up by students...
'Friends are Friends Forever' Mike Smith
A positive mood.
Tries to take comfort in the memories he has of his friend.
Perhaps, not quite as personal as the other 2 songs, or not as much depth.
“Tears in Heaven” Eric Clapton
Tries to take comfort in believing in heaven and all the good things where there are no more tears.
Doesnt ever want his son to forget him
Wants him to guide him when he goes to heaven, but knows his time is not now.
Fallen Volbeat
A little dark, reflects angry tone
A lot more depth, complex
Takes comfort in his father's strength, but in weakness, while he has fallen, he wants his father to come as an angel and pick him up and give him strength to carry on.
Perhaps writing the song, helped him gain his strength.
4. What type of mood or tone does the song you choose reflect?
Give 3 examples from the song lyrics to support this claim.
5. How could this song's lyrics help Phoebe, deal with her loss?
Note: you may want to write an introduction, then you could use each of the 5 questions as the body paragraphs. Don't forget to include a conclusion.
