Welcome to Mr. Squires' English Language Arts (ELA) Class

The grade 8 ELA course will require effort, organization, and homework. September outcomes:
1. Students should have a novel by now. We started 'reading Fridays' last week and will continue for the month of September and first week of October. Students need to bring a novel to class on Fridays and read. Many students will read outside this time period and that is urged. At the end of this 4 week period students will have to design a story map and present in class.
2. Global Citizen unit in the textbook. We will do a series of stories/essays/poems on this theme followed by a poster activity and then a test.
Please note that once students have their Computer Access Acceptance Sheets turned into the HR teacher they will get access to school computers. All students will be expected to use Google Classroom this year. This is where the teacher will post all assignments, resource material and other pertinent materials.

Highlights include: bringing warm clothing, waterproof footwear and bedding, and not bringing electronics, hair straighteners, iPads, or electronic games. Cameras are ok, but cell phone coverage is analog so your battery will not last long - best to use airplane mode if you use your phone as a camera. This trip is part of our curriculum, and promises to be a really great time. More information about the centre's facilities can be found on the Brother Brennan Centre website. Please finish the June 2012 practice exam for next class. The 'identifying variables' worksheet that we did today will help you with this.

It is strongly recommended that you check your marks on PowerSchool to ensure that there is not any missing work throughout the year.

'The end-of-year Intermediate Science Exam is a Scientific Literacy Assessment. This NOT a cumulative examination covering the units taught during the year, but an assessment of students’ ability to graph and interpret experimental results, and to read with understanding a text relating to science. It counts for 10% of the final grade in the course.

This exam consists of two parts:
A.Data analysis: a simple experiment is described, results are reported, and students are asked to graph and interpret the results.
B.Case Study: students read an article on a science topic (choosing one of two articles offered) and answer comprehension questions.

This exam is not something you can 'study' in the sense of memorizing information, however, we will be doing several practice case studies next week.

Sample finals can be found at: https://sites.google.com/site/sciencesmmebrunet/examen-final--pensee-scientifique-esd
