We have already spent four periods with chromebooks in school doing initial research and learning some APA format for writing a research paper. By Tuesday, Feb. 15th rough copies done and then peer edited. Final copies due Friday, Feb. 18th. There has been quite an amount of time spent on biographies. They should be well done. |

The norm for me is once I correct an assignment for the entire class a mark of 0% will be in place should the evaluation be missing or not handed in. The mark (0%) acts as a placeholder until the assignment gets submitted. By the end of term 1 should the assignment not be submitted the mark of 0% will remain unchanged. If I did not put the 0% in the mark would show as much higher. This way, parents/guardians do not see a pseudo (inflated) mark and can ensure the work gets completed. |

a) Visual - WWF picture. Study the visual and do questions. Added another document to aid in answering questions.
b) Independent Novel # 2. Students should be reading their novels at home and on scheduled reading days in class. The assignment for independent novel # 2 is a 'Theme Spread'. It is posted on Google Classroom. Students have been shown examples of the 'Theme Spread' in class (e.g. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory - Wonka Bar).
3. Gander (9-11) Ripple Effect Documentary - students were shown a documentary (on Google Class). They can also read p.8 in their 'Home Grown' booklets. Do assigned questions on Google Classroom.

Happy New Year. In kicking off 2021 students in grade 8 are doing:
1. Biographies - each student has selected a person who has made a positive and significant contribution to society. They have been given a template to do the assignment. We will utilize chromebooks and the computer lab. Students who are too idle during these periods will have to finish the assignment at home. All info on Google Classroom. Due date: January 29th
2. Independent Novel #2 has commenced. All students were given opportunity to get a novel from the library. Some elected to bring a novel from home. We will be doing silent reading every Friday for the next 3-4 weeks. This will be followed by an assignment - Theme Spread. This will be posted on google Classroom in the next week or so.
3. Prior to Xmas we did Story Telling. This assignment had students follow the template of a fairy tale but using the point of view of a different character. E.g. Goldilocks point of view instead of the bears. Pictures and writing the focus of assignment. A number of students have it passed in while others do not. This will be marked. |

Assigned By: Laura Clemens-Brenton | The recovery will take place next Tuesday, January 12 and Wednesday, January 13th. It will cover the first three units and students have to pick at least two of the three units to complete. Students may complete all three units if they wish, but only two are required. Students, with their parents/guardians, should look at their grades in powerschool to determine which unit(s) had assessments with their lowest scores and focus on those units. Students have to let me know what units they will complete by Friday. The recovery will provide a chance for students to improve on their grades in previously completed units.
Students were given review and summary for the first three units today. We began working on unit 3, since it was the most recent unit completed. We will continue to work on this tomorrow and then continue with review of the other units after that. Students are to work on the material in class and at home at their pace - class time will provide opportunity for individual students to ask questions on the material they have questions about. Unit 4 is on hold until after the recovery.

Adopt a Senior is back for Xmas. Every homeroom (30 in total)) at MDJH collects money to buy approx. 30 seniors from St. Patrick's Mercy Home a gift. Many seniors have little family around at Xmas. Covid-19 is certainly not helping. As such, receiving a gift or two from MDJH certainly goes a long way to brightening their Xmas. Donations will be collected by homeroom teachers until December 11th.

Hoping everyone is doing well as we adjust to a new norm for the unforeseeable future. Just want to reiterate to everyone that ZOOM Meetings will continue to take place twice a week:
Tuesdays and Thursdays @ 12:00 noon for grade 8's.
Work will continue to be assigned via Google Classroom. We just finished the novel, 'The Outsiders', in grade 8. All assigned work that students attempt will be graded. Should a student's average remain the same or improve it will be entered in PowerSchool. Should the mark decrease one's average it will not be entered.
Please keep in mind that learning will continue and the curriculum in the English course will be covered. The goal for doing such is to give each student every advantage as they transition into the next grade. A number of students have been active and participating in both the video conferencing sessions and completing assigned work via Google Classroom. Some students have not been active on video conferencing but are doing assigned work on Google Classroom. Both are acceptable and beneficial for students.
However, if a student is not participating in any form of educational activity - for example the core subjects (math, science, English, social studies, French) they may put themselves at a disadvantage:
1) not participating results in student not being able to improve one's average
2) students at risk of failing or currently not passing have an opportunity to do assignments to improve one's mark. There are students who need to engage and they are not.
Parents are urged to check with their child(ren) to ensure they are engaged and active with their academics. Teachers at MDJH have been posting regularly on Google Classroom. |

The math department are celebrating Pi Week. There are fun activities throughout the week reinforcing mathematical concepts. Students have opportunities to win ballots and have their name drawn for prizes. It culminates on Friday with cakes/pies auctioned off to homerooms. Proceeds go to the purchase of chrome books for the math department and the WE foundation of which MDJH supports. The 8-1 homeroom asks:
i) If you would like to donate a cake or pie for the auction please visit the schools website. Donations can be dropped off on Thursday evening 6-9 PM at the school or Friday morning.
ii) Students are asked to donate $$ to participate in the auction on Friday. All classes will receive at least one cake. Homeroom classes get to select their cake based on the amount of money they bring into homeroom. Hence, class with most money donated select first and so forth.
Students can donate through their homeroom teacher. |

Assigned By: Craig Squires | Each year, MDJH participates in the 'Adopt a Senior' at Christmas program. Each homeroom is given a list of wish items for one senior. Our HR list includes: i) baby shampoo, ii)baby body wash iii) polident. Some of the lists are quite small while others more costly. We ask each student to bring in a donation. Students can volunteer to bring in an item on the list or they can bring in a monetary donation: $1 or $2 or whatever they wish to donate. All funds from all homerooms are put together to purchase the items on the list for all our seniors. Once the items are purchased, student council members match up the items with the correct senior and wrap or put in gift bags to be dropped off to St. Patrick's Mercy Home. We ask that donations be made by Thursday, December 6th.

We just completed the novel, Catch Me Once, Catch Me Twice (CMO,CMT) by Janet McNaughton. We will have a content quiz on Thursday morning. It comprises of 30 - 40 multiple choice. Students were given a hard copy sample today in class and should utilize it for study purposes. Students are free to take the novel home if they wish. We read it aloud in class and did an in-depth critique. Students should go to Google Classroom for documents that will prepare them for both the quiz and test. The zero acts as a placeholder until any outstanding work is handed into the subject teacher. The reason: students and parents/guardians do not see a pseudo mark for the student. If zeros are not put in place for work/assignments not completed or handed in, the Power School mark will not reflect a student's performance. Subsequently, marks will tend to be inflated. Hence, zeros will remain in place until outstanding work is handed in and corrected. By the end of term I any work not submitted will result in a mark of zero permanently. |

Language Arts
Assigned By: Craig Squires | Students have been reading their independent novels since school started. They have been given 4-5 periods in school to read and the expectation is to finish it at home it needed. As of today novels are 'supposed' to be finished and students are to individually prepare a 'Story Map' on their respective novel. Some will do it hard copy while many will choose to do it electronically through Google Slides. Oral presentations of these 'Story Maps' commence tomorrow (Thursday) and will continue on consecutive school days until all students have presented. Please have your son/daughter visit the Google Classroom page for complete details and the rubric for marking. |

Starting Thursday (Oct. 4th) they need to have their 'Story Map' completed either on a half sheet of bistleboard or electronically in Google Slides. Some students will need to finish reading their respective novels at home. Google Classroom has all the details and marking scheme. Students have to be ready to present on Thursday (Oct. 4th) and subsequent English classes until the class has completed all presentations. |
