Then students expressed curiosity about the recent lunar which was visible from some parts of Canada, and because you don't get to thrive 26 years in a classroom without learning to recognize a teachable moment when it bites you on the nose, I took the cue and we went off into a grand exploration of the workings of the solar system. Students learned how the 24-hour rotation of the Earth causes day and night; how the 28-day orbit of the moon around the Earth causes the phases of the moon; and the causes of both lunar and solar eclipses. Then someone asked when would the next solar eclipse visible from St.John's would happen. Google says 'June 10, 2021, with the maximum coverage around 7 am'. Science Assigned By: Nathalie Brunet I talked with the students about the new condensed schedule. This has been a very hard school year already, and the new schedule makes it harder yet. We have eight more weeks of school to get through and I promised the students that I would do my best to make that time as gentle to everyone as I could make it. My plan is to go outside every science period, even if only for a walk around the school, barring seriously bad weather or the occasional period where an activity might be just too long to allow for the time. They get to pick whether we go at the beginning or the end of the period. Today they picked the beginning of the period, so we started with a swing around the school. Then we looked over the results of last week's experiment where left various solutions to evaporate to observe the appearance of the residue and completed the descriptions on p.33 of the booklet. Discrepancies between the readings on different thermometers brought us to consider uncertainty in measuring instruments. Then we compared the temperature feel of sitting on wooden benches with sitting on the rocks in the outdoor classroom. I am going to take this towards a comparison of thermal conductivity, but I opened the discussion first to allow students to propose their own ideas about the felt difference, which brought to light a full range of personal conceptions about heat and heat transfers.
