November 29, 2017 Science Assigned By: Nathalie Brunet Driven by students' questions, we explored both the infinitely small (from living organisms to cells to molecules to atoms to subatomic particles, to quarks and down to strings) and the infinitely large (from planets to the solar system to stars to galaxies to clusters to the Universe), using the Scale of the Universe website. We came back to the behaviour of molecules in solids vs liquids vs gases, using the PhET simulation, which led to an exploration of absolute 0. Then on a quest to understand whether molecules are living or non-living (biotic or abiotic) we first established the caracteristics of living things (consuming food, breathing, reacting to the environment, reproducing) and noted that individual cells do have these characteristics but that molecules do not; therefore molecules are not living. They probably think they side-tracked me. They just inflicted upon themselves about half the outcomes of the entire Intermediate Science curriculum in one swell foop. Who's the Boss exactly? Your job is to give the character three birthday presents. Each present you choose must be related to the type of person the character is or to a significant event that the character experiences. Part One Process Writing – In-class assignment Write a five paragraph essay. Paragraph One: Brief summary of your book Paragraph Two : An explanation of the first gift. Include the following: • A sentence or two telling why this gift is appropriate for the character • A brief summary of the part of the story which gave you the idea for the gift • A comment about why you think the character will like the gift Paragraph Three: Repeat the requirements of paragraph two for your second gift.
