Visit to the Brother Brennan Centre for some students: the school has some space available on a bus going to the Brother Brennan centre next week, Thurs/Fri November 3-4. I am giving priority to students in my two grade 7 classes (7-4 and 7-5) who have not already gone to the centre. (If any spaces remain, we may be able to take a few extra students.) The remaining students from both homerooms will be combined together during our absence and follow the schedule for 7-4. Students have received permission slips. If you need an extra copy, it can be downloaded from:

For the test, you will be asked to read an unseen article and answer two types of questions: selected response and constructed response.
Selected response questions are known as multiple choice questions in other subjects. Your job is to choose the best response. Other answers may seem right, but you must decide which is best.
Constructed response questions are long-answer questions. You need to follow the outline given by your teacher to answer these questions.
Study the following pages in your Literacy 7 text:
• p. 2 “ Making Connections”
• pp. 36-37 “Recognizing Purpose and Audience”
• p. 42 “Sequence” - Pay particular attention to the words in italics near the bottom of the page. We call these transition words.

As written in the Parent Newsletter:
'The end-of-year Intermediate Science Exam is a Scientific Literacy Assessment. This NOT a cumulative examination covering the units taught during the year, but an assessment of students’ ability to graph and interpret experimental results, and to read with understanding a text relating to science. It counts for 10% of the final grade in the course.
This exam consists of two parts:
A.Data analysis: a simple experiment is described, results are reported, and students are asked to graph and interpret the results.
B.Case Study: students read an article on a science topic (choosing one of two articles offered) and answer comprehension questions.
This exam is not something you can 'study' in the sense of memorizing information, however, we will be doing several practice case studies next week.

Students need to work on a question of conflict in the play 'The Monkey's Paw' tonight. There was ample time provided during school time for this. I will provide feedback to individuals in class tomorrow.
Short Story Terms List – Grade 7
The main elements of a short story are:
plot, conflict, setting, theme, character, and point of view.
Plot – the events that occur in a story
Conflict – a struggle between opposing forces. There are three types of conflict:
1. Internal conflict – character vs. self
2. Interpersonal conflict – character vs. character
3. External conflict – character vs. an outside force such as nature or society
Setting – the time, place and circumstance in which a story takes place. Circumstances are the conditions that exist as the story opens.
Theme – the main idea that the author is trying to communicate to the reader
Character – a person involved in the action of a story
Point of View - Narrator – is the person who is telling the story.
1. First Person Point of View – occurs when the main character tells his/her own story. The narrator is “I”, one of the characters in the story.
2. Third Person Omniscient Point of View – when the author is outside of the story and presents the thoughts of all characters. The narrator is all knowing and describes the thoughts and feeling of all the characters but is not a character in the story.
3. Third Person Limited – occurs when the author tells the story from the viewpoint of just one character. The narrator tells the story as “he” or “she”.
Know how to label a story line. See p. 94 of your text.
