Welcome to homeroom 7-1, room 218! Reminder to parents: Curriculum night is Thursday, September 17th at 7 pm. All parents are welcome to come to school to meet your child's teachers.

This week students wrote their first journal entry, 'All About Me.' This was a multi-paragraph entry which was written in class.
Students were also brought to the school library or LRC ( learning resource centre) where they had the opportunity to sign out a novel. We will have a 'Reading Friday' this week where students will read their first of 4 independent novels. This may be a school novel or one which has been brought from home. The assignment for this novel will be given to students on Friday, September 18th and is due on Friday, October 9th.
Students also received their text book, 'Literacy 7'. We will begin unit one, 'Step Up', later this week. This unit includes short stories, non-fiction essays, as well as poetry.

The process piece/writing section of the final exam will be written on June 2nd during the first two periods of the day. The remainder of the exam will be written on June 18th during the morning session. Students will write all exams in their homeroom classrooms.

This week we began discussion for the 'Turning Points' essay project. This is a project which students will work on together and independently in class for approximately 4 weeks. We have begun the unit by discussing values we have for ourselves and values we have for others.
We will also have an in-class spelling bee this week ( this is voluntary for students). Class winners will participate in an in-school competition and may then proceed to regional competition. This is in preparation for the Scripps National Bee. Details will follow.
We are also working on our second independent novel project. Once students have completed their novels, they are asked to create either a 'me box' for the main character of their novel OR create a movie poster for their novel. A detailed explanation of each project was given out in class. This is due on Friday, February 13.

As well, this week we continued with the Step-Up unit in English. We completed a summary of two non-fiction pieces and made text-text, text-self, and text-world connections with articles in the book, newspaper stories, and examples that students discussed in class. The test on this unit will be on Tuesday, October 7th.

This week students worked on their first journal entry entitled, 'All about Me'. Also, students received their text books, 'Literacy 7', and we began our first short story, 'The Nest'. We discussed 'making connections' ( page 2 of text): text to self, text to world, and text to text.
Also, students have chosen their first independent novel of the year ( there will be 4 independent novels). We will be reading these on Fridays for the first few weeks. The first novel assignment, a visual/picture project, will be due in early October. A worksheet will be given out in the next few days.

We are continuing with 'Who is Frances Rain?' As a final project for this novel we will be working on a booklet of activities in class. There will not be a test on this novel.
Students are also reading their independent novels in school and at home. We will complete an in-class process piece as the book report on this novel.
At the end of next week we will begin our 'Mysteries' unit. This will be a group research project and will take approximate one cycle ( 7 school days) to complete. I will be putting students in groups of 3 to work on this in class.

We have completed the unit 'Entrepreneurs en Herbe' and have begun 'Le Grand Voyage'. We opened the unit by looking at our new text and discussing the continents of the world. The final project of this booklet will be in the form of a tourism brochure/power point presentation. As in the previous unit, we will discuss several new verbs, review the 'imperative' verb tense and learn prepositions and names of countries, continents and provinces. We will also learn about different ways of travelling to countries and within countries.

We will be decorating our classroom door on Friday and on Tuesday, students are asked to dress in team colors for a student 'Olympic' parade. Fluvarium- Permission slip and fee

We missed our class today for the Remembrance Day assembly, however, I visited the class during homeroom to distribute Permission Forms and Info on our field trip.

With the upcoming holidays we have short notice. Students will be going to the Fluvarium Tuesday Nov.12th at 9am! Students are required to return the permission form and fee to me tomorrow or Tuesday morning in order to go on the trip. Those who didn't get the permission forms this morning may bring in the fee tomorrow and I will provide a new permission form for them. Please get these in asap as we have no school Friday or Monday and will be going on Tuesday.
