This week we worked on poetry and grammar. Also, students were informed that they will have to read one more independent novel for the year. They may choose one from the school or bring in a book from home. We will have a 'reading Friday' class next week and will have approximately one month to read the book. Therefore, students will have to read their novels at home as well.
We have begun a 'Digital Citizenship' unit in English. We will be discussing digital security, health and wellness/etiquette, healthy on-line reputations, etc. At the end of the unit, students will write a 5 paragraph process piece on ways to protect themselves while navigating the digital world.
After the digital media unit, we will complete a group research project on the 'Mysteries' unit of Literacy 7. This will be a photo essay project.

The Chapter 5 quiz has been set for Wednesday, January 25th, Day 7. A copy of the review sheet can be found in the Notes and Worksheets section of my website.

For the Science Project, all materials can be found in Google Classroom. All students have usernames and passwords and are able to log in to this from home. Here is the lowdown....

First, students were to speak to me about their project idea and then fill out a form in Google Classroom called 'Science Fair Topic.' That was due to be submitted on Monday, January 16.

Second, students are to fill out the document in Google Classroom called Science Project Plans - Either the Project Plan Model or the Project Plan Experiment, depending on the type of project they are doing. Most students have started doing this already - it can be accessed directly from Google Classroom. This is due on Monday, January 23.

Then they need to start working on their project and start filling out the Student Project Guide. This part will be due with the rest of their project at the end of February.

If students have questions, they can always come see me in the library during recess or lunch and there is a help session put on by the Science Department teachers during Day 1 and Day 3 at lunch in room 125.

This week we discussed sequence/transitional words and completed a worksheet in class. We also reviewed a Step-Up test from a previous year. The reading was a non-fiction article about Terry Fox who stood up to raise money for cancer research. We then completed selected response/multiple choice questions together. We will continue to work on the contructed response questions - writing a summary and making a connection. Sample answers/exemplars will be given to students after they have written their answers in their notebooks. This may be taken home to study.
We have also been working on time-management, especially concerning the test on next Wednesday. We have been discussing how long we should spend writing each part of the test.

Today, all grade 7 students saw an anti-bullying presentation by Rachel Ashley entitled 'No Time for all That'. Rachel Ashley is a motivational speaker/ singer/entertainer from Manitoba. She also has a website which tells her background. We then wrote a text-text, text-self, or text-world paragraph about the presentation and our Step-Up unit. This was a well-developed paragraph of at least 8 sentences. We brainstormed as a class and then students worked independently. This was collected at the end of class.
